Every year we try to spend sometime exploring our home province, Newfoundland! We live in such a beautiful place. This year was our biggest adventure yet. Our itinerary included Twillingate, Burlington and Gros Morne National Park. Of course, I will be recapping the entire adventure here. We’ll start with stop number one, Twillingate.
One Day In Twillingate
Twillingate is about a 5 hour drive outside of the capital city of Newfoundland, St. John’s. I’d recommend driving yourself if possible. Our public transit system is almost non-existent and outside of the city? Forget it.
Where to Stay
We stayed at the most lovely little inn, the Sunshine Inn. The inn has 5 rooms each decorated beautifully. There is a shared kitchen space with a continental breakfast and everything you’d need if you choose to cook yourself. The location was right in the centre of town. It was just perfect and we will definitely stay here in the future. While we didn’t spend a whole lot of time here other then sleeping, we headed back here in the evening and enjoyed sitting out on the beautiful deck overlooking the water.
Where to Eat
We enjoyed lunch at Crow’s Nest Cafe which was incredible. We had the chilli and pulled pork sandwiches and enjoyed them outside on the patio. It was a great way to start our staycation in Twillingate.
We had dinner at Doyle Sansome & Sons. The food was good but the decor left a little to be desired. But if you can get past that it is good, albeit basic, seafood. I had the lobster which is their speciality.
Things To Do
There are so many hikes in this area it is incredible. Sadly, we only managed to do one hike but we chose the right one as it had stunning views. We hiked out to the natural sea arch, which was stunning. I took tons of pictures along the way.
We also visited Split Rock Brewery and sampled some of the local beers. They have a huge taproom and about 8 different beers to sample. The beer is great, we had a lot of fun here enjoying the beer and atmosphere. Just a heads up, there is no food on site (except chips) so the kiddos aren’t allowed. Definitely check this place out!
Twillingate is such a beautiful little town with tons to do. It was a great relaxing start to our staycation. Stunning scenery, amazing food and lots of things to do and see. What more could you want? We will definitely be back to check out more of the hiking and restaurants.

Favourite place to visit in Newfoundland?
I enjoyed your blog very much, having visited Twillingate and Fogo a few years back and being reminded through your blog what a special place that Newfoundland is. Thanks for sharing your trip!
Thank you so much for this lovely comment. I am so proud to be a Newfoundler. Thank you for visiting our province!
Thanks for sharing. Next time you visit, you’ll have to check out Rock Adventures kayaking tours! We look forward to paddling with you.
Thanks for your comment! Sounds amazing!
Next time try the hiking trail. Top of twillingate located on bayview street. its breathtaking
I would love to check out more hiking trails in Twillingate! We will have to do that one next time.
Enjoying your blog! Especially interested in St. John’s as we are planning a trip there this summer. My sister was born in St. John’s, but we have not been back for many years, and I know it has changed/grown tremendously since our last visit. My parents lived on Topsail Road in St. John’s which I believe is no longer there. We fondly remember staying at the old Newfoundland Hotel, where my mom at lobster for three meals every day, and we finished the evening with Newfie Nightcaps! We are excited about our trip this summer and I’d love any recommendations you have for St. John’s, and/or day trips nearby, especially restaurants, as we are a bit food obsessed. Haha. Thanks so much for your writings, I will continue to enjoy them!
Thank you for the lovely comment!
My favourite restaurants can be found in this post: http://www.thewanderlusthomeblog.com/my-favourite-restaurants-in-newfoundland/
As for day trips if you’re into hiking any of the East Coast Trails near town make for a wonderful day away from the city. If you are here in the summer a day of hiking on the southern shore (Bay Bulls, Witless Bay, Mobile) or taking a boat tour from there plus dinner at Fork in Mobile would be a perfect day trip.
Also, heading out to Carbonear to visit Salmon Cove sands and have a meal at the Stone Jug would also be lovely.
Finally, if you’re willing to go a bit further the Bonavista Peninsula is full of things to do: http://www.thewanderlusthomeblog.com/category/newfoundland/bonavista-trinity/
I hope you enjoy your time visiting Newfoundland this summer. If you have any other questions feel free to reach out. ????
