We’ve just returned from the lone star state, Texas! Bruce had a work trip and I tagged along. I am very fortunate to have an awesome employer that allows me to work remotely on occasion so I worked from Texas the past 2 weeks. While both our days were spent working we managed to make the most of the time we had in Texas. The next couple posts will be recapping our trip and describing the best things to do, see and eat in the Houston area.
We flew in on a Friday night and crashed hard. The next day we woke up with one thing on our Canadian minds: the beach. So we headed with a friend of ours who lives in Houston to Galveston Island. Below you will find a one day itinerary in Galveston Texas to help you plan the perfect beach day. Galveston is about a 1 hour trip outside Houston, we drove there, I am not sure of the public transit options to get there. However, Houston on the whole is not a very public transit friendly city. If you can, I suggest you rent a car.
A One Day Itinerary In Galveston Texas
We headed out first thing in the morning and we were able to park right on the beach. The weather was perfect. This was the first weekend in May and it was the perfect warm weather, not to overwhelming and just hot enough. The water was ideal temperature, however, I will mention Galveston does not have clear blue water like you see in Florida. The Mississippi River empties into this area in the Gulf of Mexico so it can be a little silty and unclear in the water. We were well aware of this before we went to Galveston so we expected it.
We setup with our umbrella, (our friend had one but you can rent them on the beach) and just vegged. After a long winter, I think we were in shock with the amazing weather. We spent the day relaxing and eventually swimming. It was just incredible.
Eats & Drinks In Galveston
Eventually, we got hungry (and thirsty) and decided to have a true southern experience and go get some craw fish! We checked out yelp and decided to try Benno’s On The Beach. This restaurant is right on the beach and super casual, you order at the counter and get a number to wait for your order. This was perfect for us after a day at the beach, we were still covered in salt and sand. It was both myself and Bruce’s first time trying craw fish. We went with the three pound meal which was perfect for two people, however you can do a half order if you are on your own.
The verdict? I liked craw fish but I didn’t LOVE it the way some people do. I would definitely try it again but I felt like it was a lot of work for little reward. However, I don’t think you can come to Texas without trying crawfish if you are into seafood. Also, get the hush puppies, they are pure Southern comfort food at its finest.
Galveston Brewery
Once we were good and full we decided to head back down the beach to check out Galveston Island Brewing. The small brewery is tucked away from the beach but you can certainly walk there depending on where you are located on the island. This brewery has a very laid back feel, there was a cat sitting at the bar when we arrived. We knew this was our kind of place!
We grabbed some flights and sat outside and enjoyed our first Texas sunset. I had the Tiki Wheat, Belgin Pale, Citra Mellow and Night Fall. They were all good but the three of us named the Citra Mellow the clear winner. Overall, a great end to a perfect first day in Texas. If you are in the Houston area I highly recommend heading out to Galveston Island for a beach day.
Stay tuned for more recaps on our trip to Houston. I did most of my research for this trip on Pinterest (as always) feel free to take a look at my Texas board for more ideas if you are headed to that area!
